Maintain Your Air Conditioner for Peak Performance all Summer!
During the times of oppressive heat and humidity, it’s always nice to step into a comfortable and dry home, where the air conditioning keeps your home at just the right temperature. Unfortunately, for many homeowners, the AC seems to go on the blink at precisely the time when you need it most. Below are three simple maintenance tips for your AC system that can help you to keep it going all summer. Well maintained air conditioning systems consume less energy and cost less to operate than inefficient units, so it’s important to keep them well maintained.
Check The Thermostat
One of the easiest things to do is to check your thermostat to make sure it is operating efficiently. If you don’t have a ‘Smart’ thermostat, you might want to consider having a professional install one for you. These inexpensive devices can be set to control the temperature automatically, day and night, and most give you the option of monitoring and controlling the temperature remotely through your smart phone as well. Having an efficient thermostat that’s easy to control can not only help you to save energy, but also cut energy costs.
Check the Air Filter
When was the last time you checked the air-filter? Air filters are important elements of your air-conditioning system and should be checked every month or so during the Spring and Summer months when your AC unit gets the most use. Air filters are designed to keep the airflow in your heating or cooling system working and prevent some airborne particles from entering your home, to keep the indoor air cleaner. They also help your system in terms of efficiency and again, can help lower utility expenses. Most systems today have disposable air filters, which should be replaced every few months. If your AC system has a reusable air filter, you should check and clean it monthly for the best long-term performance.
Check the Outside Condenser
A major part of your AC system is installed outside of your home. It’s exposed all year to the elements and can become dirty and clogged with grass clippings, leaves, dirt and dust, which if left unaddressed, can certainly impact your system’s efficiency and performance.
Cleaning the condenser unit is relatively easy and should be done each spring before you start using the air conditioning.
Remove any debris blocking access to your AC unit and spray the coils inside and out with your hose to wash away dirt, leaves, and anything built up on the coils. It’s also a good idea to do this again at the end of the cooling season so that the unit is clean before you cover it for the winter.
Your air conditioning system plays an important role in helping to keep your home and family comfortable all summer long. By taking these few easy maintenance steps, you can help to ensure that your system remains in peak performance all season.
It’s also a good idea to have a professional evaluate your system every year or two for a system tune-up and preventative maintenance.
